After 100 years, UFAW is rebranding as Science for Animal Welfare. Science has always been at the heart of everything we do. Now it is in our name.
Since 1926, we have been quietly advancing the science that shapes how animals are treated around the world, from animals used in research and farmed animals to wildlife and often-overlooked species. We have consistently funded independent research, championed the development of the 3Rs, now the global framework for humane use of animals in research, and fundamentally shaped animal welfare science and standards worldwide.
Our new name reflects that heritage, and our position as the leading independent membership organisation and trusted scientific voice in animal welfare science.
Dr Huw Golledge, Chief Executive Officer of Science for Animal Welfare, says the new name better reflects the organisation’s mission:
“The science we have always supported has radically improved how animals are treated around the world, from developing the 3Rs principles that transformed animal welfare standards in research, to fundamental discoveries about the emotional states of animals, to advocacy for more humane treatment of often-neglected species like so-called ‘pest’ rodents. Science underscores everything we do, and finally, after one hundred years, we have a name to reflect that.”
Science for Animal Welfare Chair, Emma-Louise Singh, sees the new brand as a reflection of both its heritage and its future:
“We are immensely proud of our impact since our beginnings in 1926: from shaping the global framework for humane use of animals in research, to funding independent science, publishing peer-reviewed research, and advising policymakers worldwide today. Our new brand means we can be here to advance animal welfare science for another hundred years.”
Why we rebranded
Early last year we carried out extensive research with members, academics, policymakers, staff and partners to understand how audiences saw us and to explore what a new brand could offer. Science for Animal Welfare emerged as the clear preferred name in our testing, and reflected what we have stood for since 1926.
As an evidence-led organisation, we applied the same approach to developing our new identity. Dr Golledge says:
“Our research showed that we needed a name which is clear about who we are and what we do, while still reflecting everything we’ve stood for since 1926. Science for Animal Welfare ticked every box.”
We are now celebrating a century of work advancing evidence-led improvements in animal welfare, and looking ahead to the next hundred years as Science for Animal Welfare.
