Large Research Grants

Closing date –

Closed

Temporarily closed – will re-open for applications in August 2026.

Each year, a limited amount of money is available to support larger scientific research projects (over £5,000 of funding).

Science for Animal Welfare aims to encourage high quality research that is likely to lead to substantial improvements in animal welfare. Research may be fundamental (such as providing new insight into the subjective mental experiences of animals relevant to their welfare; or understanding their needs and preferences) or applied (for example, aimed at developing practical solutions to animal welfare problems).

Applications are welcome from individuals or organisations anywhere in the world.

How to apply

Applications using the online form are accepted throughout the year but will be assessed twice annually (deadlines 1 October and 1 April). For applications received by the 1 October deadline, the project cannot start before 1 January the following year.  For applications received by the 1 April deadline, the project cannot start before 1 July.

Please note: Animal welfare must be the focus of the application. Applications are assessed on their merits for animal welfare, their scientific quality, and also in relation to other applications (received or already funded).
