Animal Welfare is Science for Animal Welfare’s international animal welfare science journal. It publishes the results of peer-reviewed scientific research and reviews relating to the welfare of animals. Papers on ethical and legal issues related to animal welfare are also considered for publication, as are Horizon and Opinion papers.
The impact factor of Animal Welfare is 2.9, placing it in the top quartile of the field.
Animal Welfare is published gold open access by Cambridge University Press (CUP) on behalf of Science for Animal Welfare.
Animal Welfare has format-neutral submission for original submissions only. This means that authors do not need to format their article to journal style at this stage; and Figures and Tables can be kept in their original locations in the text. To aid our Editors and reviewers, we do ask, however, that your original submission
- is in an easily readable layout
- is continuously line-numbered
- contains information on ethical considerations associated with the work
- contains a section on Animal Welfare Implications of the study/work
Please note that we still recommend reading through our Instructions for Authors before submitting your manuscript, and that revised manuscripts will be subject to full formatting requirements of the journal.
Animal Welfare is a PCI friendly journal, and we will consider submissions of articles recommended by PCI Animal Science and may use PCI reviews and recommendations for our own review processes, if appropriate.
Animal Welfare is abstracted and indexed with all the major providers.
Access to back-catalogue and waivers
At Science for Animal Welfare, we want to make sure that everyone has the chance to publish their research in Animal Welfare, regardless of their ability to pay article processing charges (APCs). Many authors are covered by one of CUP’s Transformative Agreements (sometimes known as read and publish deals), which allow authors at many institutions to publish without directly paying an APC. For authors, who do not have funding for APCs, the journal will be able to offer discretionary waivers of the APC as well as automatic full or partial geographic waivers to authors based in a lower income country which is on the Research4Life list.For access to the journal website please click here
In pursuit of the charitable objectives of Science for Animal Welfare to promote animal welfare through education and to make the information published by us accessible to a wide worldwide audience, we have partnered with HINARI – a World Health Organisation programme. This enables us to make articles published in Animal Welfare before 2023 available online, free or at very low cost to a range of stakeholders in developing countries.
The journal is also linked through the OARE (Online Access to Research in the Environment) scheme led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the AGORA program (Access to Global Online Resources in Agriculture), set up by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN.
